I tasted the three Gundog Estate Single Vineyard wines blind and this is the wine that I kept coming back to. Incredibly captivating, this is an example of Hunter Valley medium body purity at its finest.
Each parcel of the Single Vineyard range was treated the same to ensure the site did all the talking. A two day cold soak and only 30% new oak was used for ten months.
Aromas of elegant blue and purple fruit, red berries, a faint whiff of tomato paste and fine sweet spices. This rings true Hunter in so many ways. The fruit and oak are well positioned with synonymous Hunter red earthiness riding in the back seat. An endearing spice steals the show here urging another sip - it just hangs with no intention of moving on. A beautiful, beautiful wine.
Although released at four years of age, this will be peaking in a couple of years yet and will cellar for a decade+.
