Bunchy, earthy and savoury from the get-go, this Northern Hope Estate Pinot Noir rewards patience and a little decant will go a long way.
This is my first look at a wine from little Macedon Ranges producer Northern Hope, and I like what I see.
A touch cloudy in the glass, it opens with aromas of cola, poached rhubarb, stripped bark, tilled earth and black tea. The fruit sits comfortably amongst the savoury detail, never seeking to dominate. Supple to taste, it flows effortlessly into every crevice of the mouth. Sour cherries, Amarena cherry, plums, baked strawberries and burnt orange peel unfurl in layers with fine spices so carefully placed they feel almost measured. A skinsy texture takes command through the mid-palate, providing shape and interest before driving confidently towards a moreish and persistent finish. But the key: decant and let it breathe before diving in. That self-restraint will pay off in spades before you are handed a thrilling and enticing drink.
