From the McLaren Vale subregion of Clarendon perched 310 metres above, the Angels Rise vineyard is characterised by its slightly cooler climate and rocky shalestone soils. Be sure to decant this Shiraz from Angoves and it'll be humming.
It sees 16 months in French oak (30% new) and that oak treatment has certainly had an impact. Overt on opening, it settles considerably over a few days of tasting. Using that as a yardstick, this will continue to develop over the long term, revealing its best form after several years.
Dark plums, blackberries, smoked links and chorizo blaze a trail of interest on opening. The shimmer of minerality from the rocky soils plays a quiet hand in the background. Dark chocolate, dried herbs, clove, sarsaparilla and black earth build a delightful savoury profile with fine exotic and black pepper spices drawing concentric circles around the palate on close - nice!
Modestly priced, tuck some away for best results.
