Merlot is a good drink with some effort - this isn't one of those. I was having this exact conversation with a passionate Merlot winemaker not so long ago in fact. Handled well, the variety sings.
This example, however, is bland, one dimensional and lacking energy. Sure there's dark fruit and some savoury spice, but heavy oak and firm mouthfeel make a difficult start and suffocate varietal characters from taking the stage. Dry, the mouth puckers on exit with chalky feels remaining. Not great.
