Hunter Valley Chardonnay seems to fall in the shadow of the region's leading lights Semillon and Shiraz. The team at Scarborough have three great Chardonnays in their range, all showing a unique take on this prized variety. The Obsessive is the flagship and it's damn fantastic.
Picked on 3 February 2016 and bottled August 2017. Free run juice was fermented, and once a third of the way through, it was then transferred to new French oak where it got comfy for 15 months - stirred every three to four weeks.
A generous and persistent style. Get knee-deep in barbecued peach, white-fleshed nectarine, touches of pineapple and caramel hints. Lick the lips with buttered toast and nougat feels with a deft sprinkle of spice. A beautiful mouthfeel with mouth-filling texture strokes at your satisfaction levels. That super long peachy finish has me queuing up for more. A fabulous Chardonnay indeed.
Drink now to eight years.
