There's a feeling among some Granite Belt winemakers that Cabernet is the the best variety suited to the region. I can't say I'm in that camp, but gee, this release from Ridgemill Estate is a belter!
Smart Cabernet from a place you'd least expect. Drop this beside some classic Coonawarra labels, as I did, and it stands tall. Most recently, it has won a swag of gold medals and trophies too.
Blackberry jam, dried green herbs and a cheeky mintiness all lead the charge. Dense and dark fruit with juicy blackberries and cassis at the fore fill the mouth with ease. A deft touch of aniseed and licorice bullets rush late with firm cocoa tannins to close. It's a joy to drink and will live long.
