Maude Estate Pinot Noir 2019

 

A stunning Pinot! I must disclose though, I was in the engine room in February 2020 when this was in the early stages of blending. To be a fly on the wall and to witness the discussions taking place as this was put together was just awesome.

Barrel samples and blending trials

A blend of several Central Otago vineyards that Maude has access to, this has depth but is refined. Blackcurrant with lashings of blueberries early. A veil of dried red flowers to tempt you before dark cherry fruit pushes through with some meaty aromas. Quite savoury with a hint of smokiness, it is a Pinot that is a little firm through the mouth with drying, powdery tannins. This grew on me. Day two of tasting and it shone like a beacon. Decant for now but this will reward the patient. A ripper!
