Soft and supple, Barbera lives in the shadow of Nebbiolo in its north-west Italy homeland, but this release from Mudgee producer First Ridge is a great example of why the variety has found so many friends.
Dark plums, dark cherries and a mix of berry fruits set the tone, delivered with the soft, supple feel that Barbera does so well. Veneers of fine spice roll gently through the palate at ease. A touch of wood smoke builds savoury appeal, while terrific width and length ensure the flavours linger long after each sip. There's a charming, calming presence about this wine that makes it equally suited to a casual midweek meal or an evening gathered around a fire pit with friends. Nicely done.
