Combes Wines De Franc 2018

Melbourne's City Wine Shop is my happy place. It's probably every wine lover's happy place. There's a list full of interesting and curious wines to peruse or just simply turn around and be mesmerized by the salivating offerings ceiling to floor. Forever in search of something I've never had before, I spied this Cabernet Franc from the Yarra Valley.

I knew little (nothing) about the label and it seemed the staff didn't either. "The guy who made it used to work here," one of them told me. "It's his first wine," said another. Without anything further to elaborate, heck why not give it a go?

Plenty of savoury characters leap from the glass - old leather, cured meat, tomato paste from the get-go. Blackcurrant leaf, grilled peppers, dried Mediterranean herbs and some touches of cut green herb add further interest. Some tension apparent and still quite forward, it sits long with a tomato like acidity. A wine lending itself to pizza and pasta dishes.

Drink now to five years.
