Giant Steps Syrah 2016

This wine is slowly creeping up my favourites list. Sure there are wines which offer all sorts of class on the list, but this Syrah in recent years has ticked away delivering quality and sophistication in spades for a relatively reasonable price. Take a bow, Mr Flamsteed.

The fruit comes from the Sexton and Tarraford vineyards. Hand picked, minimal intervention, wild fermentation with 30% whole bunches with 20% large format new oak for 18 months. The Steve Flamsteed special: gravity flow bottling for the win.

Scents of prettiness greet you. Violets, blue fruits - it smells cool and calm. Seductively smooth in the mouth, savoury appeal comes from the bunches. A stalkiness pokes through enough to be seen but not enough to overpower. Delicate spice is dusted across a long and satisfying finish.
