Geddes Seldom Inn Grenache 2018

Killer Grenache! What a delicate and seductive beauty we have here. Supreme drinking for $25 - charge at this.

I was in McLaren Vale in nearly two years ago, and when chatting to a few locals, the common theme was this, 'You need to see Tim Geddes - he's probably the best winemaker in the Vale'. My curiosity piqued.

Naturally, I followed through on this advice, and I'm pleased I did. What a guy! (Not bad for a Kiwi I might add). We've chewed the fat a bit since but the thing that strikes me about Geddes is his sense of calm and absolute humility.

And then this Grenache comes across the desk - the winner of Best Grenache at the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards 2019. Most other 'winners' would be choking inboxes and anyone who would listen with press releases drawing attention to their deeds. Not Geddes. He just goes about his business as usual letting the wines do the talking.

But to tell you the wine with such an accolade is a mere $25, you'd perhaps scoff. Do that if you must but then race and grab some - delicious and then some!

From two vineyards (70% came from 80 year old Blewitt Springs bush vines), two winemaking techniques were employed - one portion saw 50% carbonic maceration and the other saw whole berries in an open fermenter. The finished wine then saw 12 months in large format old French oak.

Velvety smooth, the raspberry and bright red cherry fruit waltz across the palate with absolute ease. Super fine spices reach out for an embrace and ride long. Some hibiscus and dried red flower aromas maintain the pretty factor as I keep going back for another whiff. Delicate tannins lay down and seductively caress the mouth on exit. Oh, alright then, another glass. And repeat. Brilliant!

Drink now to five years.
