Gerler Petit Verdot 2019

I had the opportunity to open this Petit Verdot alongside another from a different producer. Such exercises are excellent to do if you get the chance.

A few producers source their fruit from this vineyard and it was great to look at this Gerler release alongside the Ravens Croft 2019.

Blue and purple fruit abound with some grape bubble gum scents. It comes across greenish and stemmy initially but opens up and settles nicely over a couple of days. The alcohol here is 12.9% compared to the 14% of the Ravens Croft. I was quite curious about this as all the Petit Verdot was picked at the same time.

There's and calm weightiness about it's presence - black fruits over red plums. A sapping tannic dryness steals my attention though. Boot polish, licorice and cassis all chip in. Those voluptuous tannins deliver powdery feels. It is a wine that needs time to unfurl in the glass and is best to decant before opening. Generous meaty dishes are the go here.
