It's been a long time since I've had the opportunity to have a look at a Kaesler wine and it's great to be back on the horse. Top Barossa Shiraz here for your drinking pleasure.
The fruit comes from two vineyards planted in 1899 (Marananga) and 1965 (Nuriootpa).
Mulberry and dark plum fruit are plentiful with touches of blackberry too. 47% new oak was used and some wood spices are apparent as are clove and cardamom. There's a delightful energy about the fruit. More time in the glass reveals more brown and baking spices scattered through the mouth urging for more. Tight acid and firm cocoa tannins frame the palate and book insurance for undoubted longevity. Curiously, there was a green stalky and herb aroma and taste which got my attention on the second day of tasting but it didn't overly detract. All up, smart Shiraz.
Drink 2020 to well over ten years.
