David Cumming runs a marketing and communications business called Define Wine. He seems to have an endless supply of NSW wineries gunning for his services, and now, an ever-growing range of interstate producers seems to flock under his wing. He must be doing something right...
I recently received a tasting pack from him as a celebration of the gold medal and trophy winners from the 2018 Mudgee Wine Show. This Chardonnay from Robert Stein took the gong for the variety - and it's easy to see why.
Made from vines planted in 1976, it was hand-picked, whole bunch pressed and wild fermented in 50% new French oak. Some MLF took place.
Brioche and raw cashews lead to lemon juice and lemon butter. Some cedar, fine spices and sweet vanilla sit atop a textured and long delivery. Acid is pitched beautifully with a grapefruit tang for days. Delicious.
Drink now to eight years.
