Ravens Croft Good Girls Chardonnay 2016

I was keen to ask winemaker Mark Ravenscroft what makes this the "Good Girls" Chardonnay and if there was a "Bad Girls" version, but after a busy vintage making his own wines and those for a few others in the region, he has wandered over to Japan for a few weeks to support his beloved Springboks at the Rugby World Cup.

Scents of green mango and concentrated peach spill from the glass. There's a good whack of oak which overplays its hand. Roasted nuts and nougat play neat supporting roles. Some textural feels through the mouth add appeal but that oak just has too much say. I'd be keen to look at this over a couple of days rather than a few minutes at the cellar door.

Drink now to five years.
