Ever had an Arinto? I haven't either - til now. Vigneron Ashley Ratcliff believes the variety has a big future in Australia and I reckon he has stumbled upon something.
Ratcliff is committed to exploring alternative varieties at his Riverland Ricca Terra vineyard, and this Portuguese variety seems to have found a happy home.
It's a wine which sits somewhere in between a fresh Semillon and Vermentino. Whiffs of lemon and touches of tropical fruit, lemon rind, pineapple sage and green herbs all chip in ensuring a refreshing and crisp wine is delivered. There's an oily feel through the mouth and a touch of green apple and zippy lemon zest lingers on the finish. Chill hard and you'd be forgiven for emptying the bottle in quick time on a warm afternoon. The summer of cricket and a large pour seem a sensible match for mine.
