From Soumah in the Yarra Valley, this Single Vineyard Nebbiolo rewards patience.
On opening, there's a Christmas cake warmth that feels a little cumbersome and steals the limelight, briefly obscuring some of the detail lurking beneath. A day on, it settles and reveals a far more true reflection of itself. Dried red petals emerge with an evocative prettiness that wasn't apparent on day one, while notes of pan juices and rare steak step forward to add savoury intrigue. Dark cherries, orange peel and black tea form the core, with cardamom, clove and cedar bringing a distinct spice profile. Powdery tannins slowly dry the mouth, building grip and persistence. Give it time, though, and it begins to reveal its charms.
