Hear Me Roar Shiraz 2018

Blending wine from a couple of regions is not a new thing, but making the contributing wines separately, blending, labelling and bottling all via donation and in the name of raising money for women in wine is certainly a new concept. Here's a wine made by women to assist women in wine.

The brand name Hear Me Roar is a clear and deliberate reference to the iconic Helen Reddy song released in 1971 and taken up more widely as a rallying cry for change. All proceeds from the sale of the wine will go towards scholarships, mentoring programs and professional development for women in the Australian wine industry.

Of greater interest, and a statistic many would be oblivious to is that oenology and viticulture graduation sits roughly at 50/50 for males and females. This number drops off dramatically once females hit the workforce and now less than 10% of winemakers and viticulturists are women. Factor in senior levels of winemaking, marketing and business development and the numbers drop off again. This project aims to improve these numbers and raise the profile of females in the industry - a tremendous initiative and one worth applauding and supporting. It's anticipated that $40K will be raised from the few barrels produced - a step in the right direction.

Hear Me Roar is a 2018 Shiraz sourced and blended by four of Australia’s top female winemakers from parcels in the Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, Eden Valley and McLaren Vale regions of South Australia. The winemakers:
Emma Norbiato, Calabria Family Wines, Barossa Valley
Sue Hodder, Wynn’s Coonawarra Estate, Coonawarra
Rebekah Richardson, Irvine Wines, Eden Valley
Corrina Wright, Oliver’s Taranga, McLaren Vale

Get this in your glass and you won't be disappointed. A medium-bodied delight. Scents of red fruits, blackcurrants, touches of mulberry and sweet baking spices. Cherry ripe looms large in the mouth. Dangerously smooth and bouncing on its toes, it waltzes across the mouth with ease only before some exotic spices chime in hanging long on a persistent and moreish finish. A wine destined to warm your soul on a cool night with a hearty meal or with a square of dark chocolate comfortably wedged in the side of the mouth. Great stuff ladies - well done!

Drink now to eight years.

92/100
