For the majority of wines I taste, I write my notes, and that is that. Some wines, on the other hand, I taste then drink. Drop this Syrah in the category of the latter. One of those throw your arms around me types - gee it's delish!
It's more Shiraz than a Syrah admittedly. Chatting with winemaker Phil Lehmann, he was good enough to admit the name was an afterthought. Fair enough too - it weighs in at 14.3%. That ain't Syrah in my book. But if you are going to hold that over his head, you're a harsh human.
Such a generous and curvaceous wine which engages yet intrigues. 30% whole bunches before it sees old large format oak. It impresses and soothes. It's smack bang in the realm of 'wine you wanna drink'.
Awash with black fruits and berries, some violet and blue flower aromas add pretty factor. Suggestions of aniseed and clove hover with a curious cameo from what seems to be a little menthol. A soft minerally rub evident with delicate spice to close. The recipe in the melting pot just works, and with time in dark place, things will continue to improve.
