Curly Flat Central Pinot Noir 2020

Quite a different Pinot to its Western sibling, this Central initially came across a little more subdued. You get the sense it keeps its secrets close.

Made from vines planted in 1992, the first time the Central arrived on the scene as a single bottling was in 2018. This 2020 vintage sees 35% whole bunches used and the fruit was wild yeast fermented. It saw 14 months in oak, 64% of which was new. Pardon the 2019 bottle pic but you get the idea.

Meaty and dense with a cheeky side but it thins out a little quicker than anticipated. It builds its physique over a couple of days of tasting bringing some blackcurrants to the fore. Attractive floral highlights are met with some twiggy and forest floor notes. Long and luscious, handfuls of soft spices linger. Of the three Curly Flat Pinots, I felt this was the softest and most approachable now.
