Pikes The Hill Block Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Touted as one of the best Hill Block releases, time will be the ultimate measure. For now, there is no disputing the excellent quality of this Clare Valley Cabernet from Pikes.

A wine with a cool vibe, it possesses such an attractive presence. Red peppers, black currants and licorice get things underway. I'm drawn in by the wonderful drive that has some hustle to keep you on your toes. A little tension and a minerally shimmer sits in the background - that is not surprising really given it comes off a Polish Hill site. Wild fermented and seeing no more than 20% new French oak, delicate pepper spice, dried oregano and some varietal mint all add interest. The softly, softly persistence keeps tapping away but it's the balance and the tannins on close that speak of a long future. A keeper, this will reward furthermore with some more bottle age.
