A beautiful drink, the consistency of these Soumah Chardonnays over the years has been impressive. The Upper Ngumby vineyard is an east-facing site with an average vine age of 23 years. Handled the same way as its Hexham sibling, this was my preferred of the two.
Wild yeast fermented in French oak (20% new) for eight months, this is focused and detailed.
Lemon juice, lemon curd, and concentrated white fleshed nectarines make an early impression. Almond meal and hazelnut praline plus the faintest lick of Jersey caramel continue to add interest. Some flint and wafer biscuits fold into some ginger spices that roll on and on. I'd happily have a glass, probably two. Beautiful.
Drink to eight years.
