Gartelmann Phillip Alexander Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2016

A good example of a wine that needs time in the glass or decanter to show its true form.

From a Mudgee vineyard 630 metres above, initial aromas of stewed and ripe fruit caught my attention. On day one of tasting it felt overdone as though riding with weighted saddle bags and dragging its heels. A day on, the fruit is still layered on thick with more oak showing, but it settled. Firm tannins had calmed and blackberries and blackcurrants were more open to converse. Cassis gets in deep too. A touch of fruit sweetness, it's a wine to enjoy beside something hearty on a chilly night.
