Dr Plonk The Good Doctor's Antidote Montepulciano 2021

The entry-level FU Manchu Montepulciano is a dangerously slurpable beast, but this Good Doctor's Antidote from Dr Plonk just takes things to another level. Is it the best Australian Montepulciano I've tasted? All signs point to yes!

Montepulciano is not a variety I usually reach for, but given what I now know about this Dr Plonk, I'd have no hesitation racing back. Other examples of the variety I've seen over time have varied either being out of balance, super drying or the acid just hasn't meshed, but this wine smashes the brief and ticks all the boxes. Did I mention it's only $32?

Blackberries are the hero. There is a little more detail and precision here than its 'good times guy' sibling, but you can't ignore the dangerously smooth fruit framed by glorious sheets of savoury bliss. Baked raspberries and chocolate brownie get my attention as does a little fruit bun spice that hitches a ride all the way to a long and sustained finish with black tea like tannins in the frame. It's a superb wine.
