Brand and Sons Old Town Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Smart Cabernet this. Everything just seems well-proportioned. These Brand & Sons wines are in a bit of a purple patch at the moment. Lovers of Coonawarra ought to black book this label.

Sam Brand shares the history behind the Old Town label:

"The Coonawarra township lies in the centre of the 'region' which shares its name. But which one came first? The Penola Fruit colony was created by John Riddoch in 1891, but by 1897, the locals rebelled changing the name to the township at its centre. As has been for over a century now, the residents of the 'Old Town' including those original vineyards planted see themselves as a community, rather than a town with a passion and personality much greater than just that of the vineyards themselves."

This is an excellent wine that just feels good. Blackcurrants, cassis, roasted peppers and dried mint open the account. Dark chocolate and puffs of dusty road are partnered by some meatiness pushing through. Softly spiced, the mouth is coated effortlessly. Powerdery and chalky to finish, those spices shimmer as they are scattered about on a lengthy finish. I get the distinct feeling that there is something left in the bag but that will only reveal itself with more bottle age. Bravo!
