blü hen Riesling 2022

Riesling but a little bit different. Barrel fermented, this release from Mudgee, NSW, delivers a neat textural vibe.
Made by Robert Stein Wines winemaker Jacob Stein, "I have drawn on my experiences in the Northern Hemisphere to help build the techniques that make this wine different to what we normally produce," he says. This new label features a selection of wines made with minimal intervention. "Most of the wines see whole berry pressing and ferment, extra time on skins, often with wild ferments and minimal oak to allow the fruit to shine."

Swirl the glass to reveal custard apple, cut pear, honey toast, pastry and lemon slice things with a ping of lemon juice. A touch of cut herb sneaks in but it's those layers of interest that keep you engaged. It's a wine that glides through yet slowly powers down on exit - nice touch. I'm thinking cheese boards and or something with goat's cheese.

Drink to three years.
