Yelland and Papps Twenty Years Five Growers Shiraz 2024

A celebration of twenty years of winemaking and a tribute to the five growers that have been on the journey during that time, this Twenty Years Five Growers Shiraz from Yelland & Papps offers the perfect excuse to get some friends around and enjoy each other's company thanks to these large format bottles.

Keeping in mind the words of rock band Tenacious D, this wasn't produced to be the best wine in the world, it is just a tribute to those who have been part of the journey and success that is Yelland & Papps. And what a glorious tribute it is.

During the winemaking process, grief struck and Susan lost her brother and father within two weeks. The 'sky mist blue' label pays homage to Susan's father Kelwyn, whose prized possession was his 1960 Ford Zephyr of the same colour.

The five parcels of Shiraz come from the Barossa sub-regions of Marananga, Stone Well, Vine Vale, Dorrien and Greenock.

The wine itself was a rolling ferment and when the fruit was ripe it was delivered and added. There were no tricks or gimmicks at play, just the essence of gratitude and recognising those who have made the brand what it is over two decades. Hand plunged twice daily, it was then sent to a second fill Saint Martin French oak puncheon for eleven months.

Devilishly moreish, slurpable and curvaceous, it's a Barossa Shiraz with fabulous shape and appeal, not to mention the intelligent use of oak. A riot of purple and blue fruits spills from the glass, think blueberry paste, boysenberries and mulberry compote. There is a silkiness through the mid-palate with a milk chocolate creaminess and some hazelnuts chiming in. Time in the glass sees a Caramelo Koala effect loom up - that caramel and chocolate thing is delicious. Sandalwood and soft baking spices add a neat touch to this incredibly approachable wine with fine tannins riding a long wave. Above all, there is an unmistakable beauty about its swagger, and the large format makes it even more irresistible. Modestly priced, this is a most worthy celebratory wine. Congratulations Michael and Susan for 20 years and for this terrific tribute Shiraz.
