Ruckus Estate The Q Merlot 2015

Not named after me people - settle down. Mind you, I got a little excited at the thought. Oh to be famous! The Q Merlot from Ruckus Estate is named after the clone used - Q45.

Talking to Colleen Miller, it's great to hear her passion for the variety. There's something special about these Merlot vines, some of which were previously contracted out she tells me. Due to their success in canopy and bunch weight, Colleen and her husband Mike knew they should do something about it. And they did. Not surprisingly, Ruckus have made Merlot their thing.

Tomato bush, pan juices, sage and black fruit aromas kick into gear. More medium bodied than full, it has good presence though perhaps a fraction lighter than I would have hoped. A great wine to accompany a range of foods, dark plums and black fruit chip away nicely in the mouth. Drying and a bit chalky to finish, this is a respectable drink.

Drink now to six years.
