Yalumba Wyndy's Last Stand Shiraz 2020

The tentacles of the Hill-Smith family reach far and wide in the wine game but this Shiraz is a tribute to Wyndham Hill-Smith who fended off the MCC when playing cricket for an Australian XI in Perth way back in 1932. Wyndy was batting at 6 with some other guy by the name of Bradman, who was coming through the ranks I hear, batting at 3.

The label is clever too with the seam of a cricket ball embossed to subtly deliver the cricket theme. Well played.

Chocolate brownie and bitter dark chocolate walk chest out and striding proud. Dark fruits tuck in behind with a palate edged with fine pepper, brown spices which linger plus a cheeky vanilla side. It's pretty straight up and down - foot down the pitch, elbow up, eyes over the bat meeting the ball in solid defence. Nothing flashy but it does the job well. Casual gatherings and barbecues are the go here. For the asking price, this is good stuff.

Drink to five years.
