Hutton Vale Farm Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

There's something about these Hutton Vale 2017s that doesn't have them placed as well as previous vintages. It's left me scratching my head.

Here, the Cabernet traits can be seen and there is a generosity, but it's a bit of a blunt instrument in part. The prettiness and life I've seen in prior releases are weighed down and muted here. Like the Shiraz, this has an old-school and traditional feel. Perhaps there was a change in approach to the winemaking?

Church pew, wet timber, cloves and buckets of black fruits. Black pepper and some herby influences sneak in but the momentum through the mouth taps out early. For me, there is more head-scratching than punching the air. I wish I was doing the latter. Find the 2016s and you'll see how awesome this label can be.
