Vermentino done differently. This Second Take range from Yelland and Papps pushes the boundaries of texture and funk, and damn, they're delish.
It's not common to come across Vermentino that has been wild fermented, left on skins for 310 days, pressed off by the winemaker's kids and bottled unfiltered and unfined. Brilliant! Oh, it's vegan friendly too.
Layered with interest, think barley, dried grass, lemon myrtle, marigold flower and perry. Quite textural, it's a far cry from the fresh and vibrant Vermentino normally seen on the shelves. There's great width and complexity with a smooth caress through the mouth. What feels like a thick layer of fruit, it glides through with a finish almost refusing to leave. Some lemony juice tang loiters with intent late flanked by fine exotic spices just chilling on close. I dig the swagger this wine possesses.
Drink now to five years.
