This White Gate Wines Grenache comes from 90 year old vines and the layered detail is impressive. Savoury is the word.
Made with 75% whole bunches, it sees seasoned French oak. It opens with scents of strawberries, dark cherries, black tea and cola which all flow through to the mouth with ease. But this is where the veneers of interest seem to cascade in an unstoppable fashion. Think pan juices, a flicker of szechuan spice and dried herbs scattered throughout. Twiggy things and tilled earth possess a thrilling drive with a flash of dark chocolate. Concentrated and perhaps a little reductive, it's wonderfully moreish. Soft spices coil around a long finish with black tea tannins having the last word. This would eat up a burger or rib fillet with ease. Very nicely done.
Drink to three years.
