Barambah First Grid Shiraz 2019

This label refuses to fade quietly into history. Long extinct, the final allocation of Barambah wines was secured by Master of Wine Peter Scudamore-Smith, who sells this and a host of other wines on premise throughout south-east Queensland.

From the South Burnett 2019 vintage, the last time I saw this wine was back in 2021. The acidity was quite vibrant then, and it has held this in good stead, enabling it to age gracefully.

It leads with smokey and char aromas that fold into a meaty and savoury tone. Earthy nuances and stewed plums plant themselves on the mid-palate with a fruit cake presence. Seven years of bottle age has softened the edges with drying tannins landing on a persistent finish. Enjoy it in the short term with a slow-cooked meal or a tomahawk steak cooked over the coals.
