Welcome to Mezzaluna - Soumah's debut Reserve Nebbiolo. Made in a similar style to the famed Barolo wines, this is an excellent release.
It spends 100 days on skins, 3 years in seasoned puncheons and then 6 months in bottle prior to release. Four years in the making, this production of this wine has been the goal since the original vines were planted in 2015.
For context, Barolo DOCG wines see a maximum of 38 months in oak (minimum 18 months) and 12-24 months in bottle before release. With the heavy Italian focus from Soumah, the similarity in the making doesn't surprise.
From the first pour, it is drenched in interest and is highlighted by dried roses and purple petals, freeze-dried raspberries, rosella, and charcuterie. Things stepped up a notch on the second day of tasting, delivering a more composed wine. That extra day certainly elevated the experience and suggests that decanting to drink now is needed. But there is no need to rush.
