Thea Wines Chardonnay 2022

Cooler than the other side of the pillow, this Thea Wines release is such good drinking and it shines the light on how delicious Hilltops Chardonnay can be.

Allanna Wigley and her partner Michael Wells are behind the label. Both work in the Hunter Valley for separate wineries and this after hours passion project is a neat expression of themselves and the wines they enjoy drinking. Mention Thea to Allanna and her beaming smile radiates endlessly, yet do the same with Michael and he will drop everything in hand to share his love for these wines.

From the notable Freemans Vineyard, the fruit is organically grown, handpicked and whole bunch pressed before sitting on lees in older French oak for eight months.

It's a wine that grows on you and to get the most out of it ensure that you don't serve it too cold. What captures my attention is how it pushes the interest and texture boundaries.

Mealy with sourdough highlights, glace pineapple and green mango skip out early. Lime cordial threads its way through the core but the bready complexity is bolted to the frame. A splash of white fleshed nectarines rides beside some Greek yoghurt, creme brulee and custard powder creaminess. Its elongated finish ensures that you have a really good drink in your hands. Punch the air, this is a more than respectable debut release!

Drink to five years.
