Even Keel Chardonnay 2022

Even Keel. It's been a while. Hammered by weather issues, small crop volumes and the like in recent years, it's great to see the label come across the bench once again. These are smart wines made by the very personable and hilarious Sam Coverdale.

From the cool climes of Tumbarumba, the fruit is handpicked, whole bunch pressed and sits on lees for 10 months in older French oak. Going through full malolactic fermentation, this is a joy to drink.

Initially, it feels lean and skeletal, but a precision washes over you. This is a Chardonnay I'd recommend to decant. Possessing a measured drive and presence, the fruit is considered without all the glamour and sparkles. Lemony acid frames an energetic palate. White fleshed nectarines and lemon juice roll through with an incredibly persistent length etched with a fine creaminess. It just hits and sticks - yes! Ginger, roasted cashews and some almond meal for good measure. It's a patient wine with a loving caress that builds momentum over a few days of tasting. Give this some time and don't serve it too cold to see it at its best. Sip slow, breathe deep and it continues to grow you. A beautiful Chardonnay.
