Hayes Family Wines Block 1 Shiraz 2022

Moreish and curious, this Block 1 is an excellent Barossa Shiraz from Hayes Family Wines. Of the five 2022 Shiraz releases, this was my preferred although the incredible drive and presence of the Koonunga has every reason to wrestle for the title.

From Hayes' certified organic vines planted in the 1940s, the vineyard produces dark fruit with a little more prettiness than its Block 9 sibling less than 50 metres up the hill. Cropping at two tonnes per acre, there is more topsoil on the flat where this vineyard lies and the roots dive deep into sandstone and clay.

It sees 40% new French oak for 18-20 months.

Scents of dried purple flowers, dark fruits, some meatiness and a little aniseed get you in the mood. A wine that oozes flavour, it's lavish and luscious with blackberries and mulberries leading the way. Cloves, Dutch dark chocolate and a milk chocolate like creaminess slide through. Drying with firmish tannins, this will live long. The wealth of crushed spices and baking spices hum on an elongated finish that seemingly has no end. This is smart and an absolute joy to drink. Bravo!
