Gundog Estate Marksman Shiraz 2023

The Gundog Estate Marksman Shiraz makes its first appearance since 2019 and it is back to its brilliant best. Hampered by bushfires and weather issues, it has bounced back with a vengeance.

A blend of two vineyards, the aim is to demonstrate the best of the Canberra district. The Wallaroo vineyard in Hall is all broad dark fruits and tannins while the Long Rail Gully vineyard in Murrumbateman showcases spice and a fine boned palate. It saw French oak for 16 months (37% new).

Black cherries, Davidson plums, mulberries and baked blueberries consume the mouth. Gravelly road earthiness, charred steak, burnt sage and dried thyme peel off layers of interest. The longer it sits the more Black Forest cake aromas wriggle forward with a delightful dark chocolate dust doing its work. A little rustic charm adds to the appeal with black pepper and exotic spices gently caressing the palate and framing the close with purpose. Absolutely delicious, I could keep topping up the glass all night. Big love!
