A bit of work has gone into this Heggies Vineyard Reserve Chardonnay delivering a clever, balanced drink.
From vines planted in 1992, the fruit was hand picked in two stages five days apart and it was aged in a ceramic egg and French oak barriques for ten months on lees.
A distinct aroma of struck match skips from the glass with scents of match sticks, nougat, lemon zest, Danish pastrie and almonds building a delightful presence.
White fleshed nectarines, lemon juice, a squeeze of grapefruit and a little quartz minerality muse building depth and interest. Roasted cashews and biscotti keep things moving with a peach skin and lemon sherbet pinned to the close. Time on lees has developed the textural presence and that sheet of delight lingers longer than expected. It's quite an impressive drink that goes about its work without any glitz or glamour. Medium-term aging will build further complexity and depth. All up, this is smart stuff.
