This M Burton Shiraz is not the best Shiraz you'll ever have, but gee I like the cut of its jib. Suave, rustic and damn delicious, wines that throw a lasso around your soul like this are the ones I want to sit down with and savour every drop. And perhaps, maybe I did just that. What a beauty!
A wine that pays homage to winemaker Matt Burton's core values of love, courage and integrity, there are no other wines in the Gundog and Burton range that express what drives the man behind the brand.
Sourced from the Long Rail Gully vineyard in Murrumbateman (Canberra district) with a small portion coming from the Wallaroo vineyard, this was wild yeast fermented and sat on skins for 12 months. Only 50 dozen were produced.
Dark cherries, mulberry compote, peppered steak, barbecue smoke and a little bacon hock make an impact early. A hint of eucalypt crawls through (I'd be curious to find out the vineyard's proximity to those leafy gums), but that moves on by the second day of tasting. Evocative aromas keep coming the more air it breathes - dried purple flowers and baked blueberries keep the tempo. Still showing some tension with tannins edging on powdery, this is a wine that will reward for some time. It's such a beautiful drink and one that just keeps getting better the longer it's open. Excellent stuff.
