I've been a big fan of the single vineyard Hexham Chardonnay from Soumah over the years. From a tough vintage, this 2022 drops back a little.
A wine noted for its complexity and layers of interest, it was barrel fermented with 20% new French oak and matured on lees for eight months. Think vanilla bean, green melon, old school lemonade and white fleshed stonefruits. After letting it sit for a while I come back to find Portuguese tart, a touch of ginger and some lemon zest. There is a lemony acidity that has a pinch but it settles with time. The tang of lemon sherbet keeps you in the hunt as it reaches long. Yep, that interest is still there but it's just off the pace with its finesse of previous vintages.
