Black Estate Damsteep Pinot Noir 2020

Another fascinating Pinot Noir from New Zealand's Waipara region, this Black Estate Damsteep is expressive and layered.

Located north-east of the Waipara Valley, the Damsteep vineyard is 10km from the Home Block. As the name suggests, it's not exactly flat either... Certified organic, the vineyard was planted in 1999 and sits between 140-180 metres above sea level in clay soils that overlay sandstone and limestone.

Quite firm initially, it loosens up a little to show a softer side. Dark fruits with some raspberries and bright red cherries swing into action. Unmistakable aromas of cedar and sandalwood chime in too. Minerally through the mouth, the soils certainly have a voice in this wine. A flash of chocolate comes and goes but the attractive delicate spices keep tapping away. Seeing 28 days on skins, the depth of fruit and marriage with oak is well managed. With a persistent finish that urges another sip, go here.
