Gundog Estate Indomitus Rutilus 2021

This is Matt Burton's take on Hunter River Burgundy, be it with a twist. Made with Hunter Shiraz but partnered with an out-of-towner - some Yarra Valley Pinot Noir from the George's Vineyard (20%). As Burton says, "This wine is less about place and more about variety and style." It's a fab wine, that's for sure.

For context, Burton also makes a Pinot Noir from the George's vineyard in collaboration with good mate Dylan McMahon from Seville Estate under the Burton McMahon label

This Shiraz Pinot blend is wonderfully medium-bodied (12.8%). Dark and red cherries huddle with a little flash of Campari in the background. Earthy with dried leaves, twigs and some compost, the Pinot certainly makes its mark. The red earth of the Hunter drives through the core without being dominant. Softly spiced, it's the savoury drive of this wine which keeps developing over a couple of days that draws you in. Some milk chocolate late with a little char, it's a delightful red for those with a heart that beats for savoury driven wines.
