Pegasus Bay Maestro 2019

The Maestro represents the best of the Pegasus Bay Bordeaux fruit. I was privileged to receive a pre-release sample and all I can suggest is that you get in the queue. There is a class about its swagger and I just want more.

The dance between fruit and savoury is quite something but the fruit never stood a chance. Dark berries and plum compote shifts to earthiness, pan juices and burnt ends with chocolate and fine spices. Mushroom compost and some leather builds momentum too. Some blackberries rise up late but can't be outdone by the dried herbs, tomato paste and long, fine peppery spices. Dangerously smooth, its silky presence oozes the prestige of the label it represents. And that's precisely it, Pegasus Bay wines are always smart but when you creep up to the top of the range, the sophistication just steps up furthermore. Tasted over a couple of days, this was clearly evident. Mind you, over those few days the fruit rises up on day two and three of tasting which I found fascinating - quite the metamorphosis. Leap in here.
