What a difference a clone makes! This is Merlot you want to drink. It's smart gear well worth tracking down. As much as I'd love to say it is named after yours truly, I have nothing to do with the title. Sigh. Named Q after the Q45 clone, it is one that is vastly different to other Merlot clones planted throughout Australia. Sourced for its vibrance and charismatic charm, this is Merlot but not as you know it.
Sure there is some density and dark berry fruit, but there's a vibe here. Or dare I say a personality that is not apparent with most Merlots that come across this bench. It's fair to say most Merlots can be packaged up with a 'sameness' but the point of difference is clear with this Merite Q Merlot.
From Wrattonbully, a stone's through from the more famous Coonawarra region, think blackcurrants, blackberry pastilles, red licorice, some blueberry sweetness and delicate fine spices that run long. There are layers of interest rather than a flat pan of commonality. A Merlot that keeps adding interest - strange eh? It's a sip slow type. That comfy chair with glass in hand. There is a moreishness and curiosity and it slowly unfurls leaving a long, soft finish to consider. Above all, it's the best Merlot to hit this tasting bench in 2022. Bravo.
