I often get asked what I enjoy drinking and Yarra Valley Shiraz/Syrah is near the top of the list. It's medium bodied profile is so easy to gravitate to. This wine from Alkimi has always struck a chord with me. I've often bought it from winemaker Stu Dudine and I've been known to take it camping. It's such a great slurp on a cool night by the fire.
And although those camping settings seem far from reality in the current climate, I could happily sip away at this while embarking on social distancing. If the recent tasting session is any example, a bottle doesn't stand a chance.
A little stemmy initially by that can't sway you from the entrancing red fruit and flower aromas. There's a touch of smoky meat, but delicate fine pepper purrs through the mouth. Medium bodied, it's smooth delivery and and super fine tannins ensure this is a wine to kick back with to be enjoyed to the fullest. There's some impressive consistency here compared to previous vintages too - though this 2016 release seems the better. Run for this - I've already ordered six.
Drink to five years.
