From humble beginnings to now a Barbaresco powerhouse, the excellent quality and superb value have certainly ensured Produttori del Barbaresco is highly sort after. This 2020 is excellent!
In the 1950s, Barbaresco was on the brink of decline, with many locals abandoning the region for more stable work in Turin. It was the local priest, Don Fiorino Marengo, who rallied 19 growers to form what would become a global benchmark for cooperative winemaking. Today, the group has grown to 53 members - an impressive feat, considering only five growers have departed since its founding.
Tasting at the cellar door, I was floored to learn the Classico is priced at just €25. Talk about value.
The 2020 vintage was shaped by clear skies and lower pollution levels during the pandemic's peak. Compared to the more celebrated 2021, this warmer year has yielded a wine of greater density and richness. Aromas of tar, licorice, and roasted hazelnuts mingle with delicate dried purple flowers. It enters the palate with silky ease before tightening into a taut core of tension. Gradually, it unfurls with tar, hazelnuts, and licorice again leading the way. Fine, powdery tannins build a slow crescendo across the palate as hints of mint, orange peel, and a delicate mouth perfume rise, adding complexity and lift.
This is a wine that rewards attention and patience. With a little air, it reveals an irresistible depth. Elegant, layered, and quietly glorious, go here.
