Produttori del Barbaresco DOCG Classico 2021

A brilliant and elegant expression of Barbaresco, this is a wine of restrained power with layers of interest and complexity ready to sift through. From a much touted vintage, this Produttori del Barbaresco DOCG Classico 2021 is absolutely superb.

In the 1950s, Barbaresco was on the brink of decline, with many locals abandoning the region for more stable work in Turin. It was the local priest, Don Fiorino Marengo, who rallied 19 growers to form what would become a global benchmark for cooperative winemaking. Today, the group has grown to 53 members - an impressive feat, considering only five growers have departed since its founding.

Tasting at the cellar door, I was floored to learn the Classico is priced at just €26. Talk about value. Originally set at €25, the entire collaborative agreed a slight increase was warranted for a release of this quality. It's refreshing to see them uphold their principles, choosing fairness over profit.

Captivating from the outset, scents of pretty red flowers, violets and hazelnuts diffuse with ease. Graceful with a stunning presence, dark cherry fruit, plums, licorice and orange peel fold into one another with fabulous fluency. Ribbons of baking spice and wisps of smokiness unfurl with the late appearance of some mint. Delicate tannins float on a cloud and cap of something quite extraordinary. Run to this.
