The Rare Game is winemaker Matt Burton's pursuit of Hunter Burgundy and his flagship Gundog Estate Shiraz. Made with fruit from the famed Ben Ean site, it sees French oak (25% new) for 16 months.
A captivating array of red petals and red fruits, cranberries and red currants shine in the glass. A band of red raspberry rope and even a flash of licorice weaves its way through. Drunken cherries, char and cured meats build momentum through the mouth. A little lighter than previous years with cardamon and clove influences, it's still coiled and a little firm. Soft spices tickle a long finish. A most enjoyable wine but it doesn't have the frame for longevity.
