From the 56 year old vines of the Sandy Corner Block in the Wait Vineyard, there is an endearing complexity about this Shiraz without the killer punch. Well balanced, the density sneaks up on you. This is a ripper and I just want to snuggle up to it until every drop is gone.
The sandy soils result from the site sitting in a basin with sand deposits running into it over thousands of years. This is a contrast to the Grenache block up the hill which is on more loamier based soil.
I'm hooked from the opening. It sees a combination of French, American and Hungarian oak. Scents of charred steak, iron filings, soy, dark chocolate and dusty road earthiness keep me sifting around for more. There is so much to absorb, the curiosity builds and builds. The tension is evident on opening but this calms to a smooth ride on day two and three of tasting. And the persistent length is matched with restrained power and partnered by a rustic edge.
Blackberries, beef jus and an array of meat rub spices release themselves with patience leaving what almost resembles a powdery tannin on close. I could be tempted to give it another point... Sip slow and dive in with pike.
